Your Tax File Number

Your tax file number (TFN) is confidential and you don't have to disclose it to us. However, if you don't, you may pay more tax than you have to and you won't be able to make personal contributions to your super.

By providing your TFN, you are providing consent for NGS Super to use your TFN to search for any other super in your name. You can then choose to consolidate this super with your new NGS Super account through Member Online (our secure online portal for account access).

Providing your TFN to NGS Super

The law requires us to request your tax file number (TFN). By providing your TFN, you're allowing us as the trustee to use it to:

  • find or identify your super when there's no other way
  • work out any tax payable
  • provide it to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) when you receive your super payout or have unclaimed super money after reaching age pension age
  • provide it to any other super fund you might choose to transfer to in the future unless you tell us in writing not to do so
  • report any contributions details to the ATO for tax calculations if you exceed contributions limits
  • provide it to other government agencies where required by law.

What if I don't provide my TFN, now or later?

  • You may pay more tax on employer contributions and certain other contributions — in some circumstances, you may be able to claim this tax back, but time limits and other rules may apply.
  • We will only be able to accept contributions made for you by your employer — that means we're unable to accept other contributions, including after-tax contributions.
  • You may pay more tax on your super benefit than you would otherwise (but you can claim this back when you lodge your tax return).
  • It may be harder to find your super in the future if you change your address without telling us or if you roll over any other super accounts you may have.

The legal purposes for which the trustee can use your TFN and the consequences for not providing your TFN may change in the future.

Insurance cover

If your employer will make contributions to NGS Super and you are already an existing member of NGS Super, you will not be eligible for Default Cover if:

  • You currently have an existing NGS Accumulation account (i.e. you are opening a second Accumulation account) or
  • Your Accumulation account is established due to a transfer of funds from an existing NGS Income account or NGS Transition to retirement account (regardless of whether you will have an employer that will commence making contributions to NGS Super on your behalf).

Default Cover insurance and your insurance

You will be eligible for Default Cover# once:

  • Your account balance has reached at least $6,000 and
  • You are aged at least 25 years.

Default Cover will commence on receipt of your First Employer Contribution after you are eligible.

Eligible members will automatically receive Default Cover for:

  • Life insurance through to age 75 if joining NGS Super prior to age 70
  • Income Protection if under age 67 and
  • Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) cover if under age 67.

The Default Cover is initially based on your employer's insurance category. Your sum insured amount is based on your age.
