Nominate Beneficiaries
Your current beneficiaries
Unlike other types of assets, a super benefit doesn’t automatically form part of your estate to get distributed under instructions in your Will if you have one. There are super laws and fund rules that govern how a death benefit can be paid and to whom a super fund can pay it.
The rules for beneficiaries and death benefits depend on your division of the fund:
- Accumulate Plus and Retirement Access members can make a non-lapsing death benefit nomination, which is a legal instruction that directs us to pay the death benefit to the valid person(s) you nominate, in the proportions that you nominate. This type of nomination must be witnessed, so you cannot make or update it online. Please complete our Non-lapsing binding death nomination form available from the Forms section of our website. If we don’t have a valid non-lapsing nomination for you, we have discretion to pay the death benefit to any one or more of your dependants and/or estate in any proportion.
- Division B, D, E or CF: Your death benefit must generally be paid to your spouse under the fund rules. You can’t nominate a beneficiary.
- Division C: You can provide a preferred beneficiary nomination* for your super to be paid to any one or more of your spouse, your dependent children, and/or your legal personal representative (i.e. the executor or administrator of your estate, who then distributes it with your estate).
You can’t provide or update Division C beneficiaries online - please complete the preferred beneficiary nomination form available from the Forms section of our website.
- Division CB, CC, CD, CE, CH, CN or CO: You can provide a preferred beneficiary nomination* for your super to be paid to any one or more of your spouse, your children, a financial dependant, and/or your legal personal representative (i.e. the executor or administrator of your estate, who then distributes it with your estate). You can provide or update your beneficiaries online or by completing a preferred beneficiary nomination form available from the Forms section of our website. Read the Important Information for more on the definition of beneficiaries.
* A preferred beneficiary nomination is not binding on the trustee. Your nomination may help the trustee decide who should receive your benefit but the trustee has discretion to pay your death benefit to any one or more of your eligible dependants under super laws and/or your legal personal representative.
For more information about death benefits and beneficiaries, read the Product Disclosure Statement, Reference Guide or Member Booklet that applies to your division, available from the Documents section of our website.
